Did you know that, if you find information on the IRS website and it turns out to be wrong, you can still be penalized? In a blog post, national taxpayer advocate Nina Olson explains a number of the issues with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and answers posted on the IRS’s website, including their varying weight as authority and the extent of protection they may provide from penalties. An answer may provide taxpayers with “some degree” of protection from penalties, but the extent of such protection varies.
