How much can an identity theft victim find out? Generally, tax return information must be kept confidential. In some cases, victims of identity theft can’t get information about what thieves have filed under their names. The IRS just addressed disclosure of returns filed by thieves or undocumented workers with stolen Social Security numbers. In some cases, these don’t qualify for disclosure protection, and victims may obtain copies of fraudulent returns. However, some info may be redacted or still not available to victims. (AM 2017-004)
